:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kernel -- Couldn't Put It Down : I am a Brian Burke fan, so my opinion may be a bit bias, but I thought this book was fabulous. I'm normally a pretty slow, casual reader. Over the course of 2-3 months, I might finish a 400 page book. I finished this one in less than two weeks. The "behind the scenes" look into the hockey world, is something we've started to see over the past few years, but this book takes it to another level. He talks more about his career than his childhood, which he made a point of saying in an interview on the NHL Network Radio, and I why that was important to him. I'm not here to write a review on the man's personal life, but the way the book was written was fabulous. Would not recommend as a gift for kids, there is quite a bit of foul language, but I didn't find it offensive as it isn't a swear word every other sentence. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tried & True -- Respect : Really enjoyed this book. The writing style is true to Burkie's personality. I respect guys like Brian Burke and John Tortorella for being tough but fair. Lately the hockey world was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons because coaches who appear mild mannered in the public eyes but mistreated players behind closed doors but you dont hear any of it about Burkie and Torts. This book reaffirms what I always thought what kind of a man Burke is. Thanks for a great read and the life lessons. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from J E Polkinghorne -- Lessons in Hockey and in Life : An excellent inside look at hockey on many levels. Joan and Bill would be very proud of Brian as a great hockey guy and person although Himself would not approve of the foul language! A great read written by a great guy from a great family. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Fanning -- Great read! : Really enjoyed this book, one of the best hockey books I've ever read. I always thought Burke was somewhat abrasive, so I was curious how he would come across in this book. The stories are heartfelt and honest with great perspective. Much respect for Brian Burke and all of his contributions to hockey. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael P. Weber -- This book cost me some sleep! : I enjoyed Brian Burke’s openness in this book, and it resulted in a very quick read. I only had one sleep while reading it. The stories are incredible and learning how Brian thinks made it all worthwhile! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andy White -- Holds nothing back : Read it if you are hockey fan. Holds nothing back. May agree or disagree but not a wishy washy book. Comes across as jerk a times and I don't think he would deny it. Good hockey book that doesn't lack for opinions. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jonathan zucker -- Great hockey book, but an even better man. Leaned a lot! : Great book! Habs fan, who always appreciated Burke. Says it like it is. Learned a lot about the man. Enjoyed every page, did not want to put it down. Highly recommend. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from What??? -- Good read : Good read that covers a lot of what it takes be a GM in the NHL. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Mugford -- A final rejoinder that just didn't need to be in the book : I'm lucky in one regard in that my opinion of Brian Burke changed years ago when I wrote in my blog, on Nov. 24, 2009, that my attitudes toward Burke had evolved that very day. Credit goes to John Buccigross of ESPN. Later, I defended Burke upon his firing by the Toronto Maple Leafs, having come to believe a bit in the Burke Blarney. I still disagreed with him on some key points of hockey philosophy, but I was starting to think of him as more than just the American version of Donald S. Cherry. Having read this autobiography co-penned with one of the elite Canadian sportswriters, Stephen Brunt, I have to say that his devotion to his children should be what we all strive for. It increased my respect even more. The book is a bit cruder than I would have liked (most sports dressing rooms are), but I was ready to get out the ol' five-star rating I rarely use. Then came Burke's final shot at those that had the temerity to change their mind about him and then tell him of the fact. And it was simply not needed in the book. I imagine the 'discussions' with Brunt over it's inclusion in the book would have been long and frustrating for Brunt. Of course, he might very well have been on board with it. I haven't talked to Brunt in ages. My advice is for readers not to read it. You'll already have Burke's self-crafted image as a man who cares little for the opinions of most of humanity. And, for the most part, it's the public and private face of a well-known man in Canada's hockey circles. Learned a few new things, but mostly about the family dynamics I was only vaguely aware of because of Buccigross' article more than a decade ago. That said, the book is four pages longer than a five-star rating. ( Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dean Gordon -- Hockey fan : Burkie has sort of grown on me over the years so I thought his book could be interesting and it was, enjoyed it tremendously and I haven't read a book in years so it was a real treat. While reading it and knowing what Burkie had done it the past, as I follow sports, I could envision and understand what he talked about. I recommend the read! - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Larry S -- A good look into the world of pro hockey : The book is informative for anyone who has been following the NHL for the past several years. I enjoyed Burke's insights into other famous hockey people, the ins and outs of building a winning hockey team and the cut throat business of dealing with other people in positions of responsibility. I was disappointed that Burke didn't go into more history with his days as the Leaf GM and it's clear that Brian Burke is a proud family man, I understand that, but didn't have a lot of interest in his family. All in all, I really enjoyed his style of "telling it like it is (was)". ( Reviewed in Canada on November 13, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ralph Brine -- The evolvement of the iconic Brian Burke as a family man and an elite NHL executive. : Excellent book demonstrating what happens behind closed doors in North American professional hockey. Brian Burke painfully explains how the demands of hockey on top management leaves little time to sustaining a marriage and raising his children. He explains the process of how some historic signing and trading of professional players takes place. Burke had his own template of player characteristics that a Stanley Cup contender required to be successful. He is authentic describing people along his travels that he enjoyed and respected and people he had no time for and would rather take out behind the barn. A factual and enjoyable read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from John G. Howley -- An honest man doing an honest day's work- with a terriic sense of humour : Burkie can be a polarizing figure, for hockey fans and non-fans alike. His tenure in Toronto began with his stated philosophy on players: "We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence." Then his first big trade was Phil Kessel, a prolific goal scorer but one who possesses none of those traits. So what to expect from this book? Surprisingly, a great deal of openness and honesty. Burke tells it all, from his playing career to his work with NHL tams and the league front office. He is remarkably candid (painfully so, given the scope of the personal tragedy) about the loss of his son Brendon in a car crash. He pulls no punches with players, coaches and sportswriters he has no time for. He owns up to his failure to bring significant playoff success to the Leafs, but also castigates the front office for throwing him under the bus after he reached the playooffs following Toronto's long drought. Burke's sense of humour (caustic at times, hilarious always) burns through the book, with quick quips and amusing tales. What I enjoyed most was the interior view of how the NHL works, from the league offices to the GM's suites. Burkie is a prolific swearer, and he isn't shy about using expletives to make his points. He is, in short, an honest man who goes about his work with diligence and honour. The book exposes a Brian Burke that evokes a likeability not always evident in his media appearances. He says fans sometimes approach him and say things along the line of, "I never liked you but having heard you speak, I like you a lot." He couldn't care less.
