  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Arneblaze -- Fascinating first novel of Edith Wharton : This just misses being a novella, as it is quite short, but it shows Wharton in her element at the very start of her literary career, it being her first novel. The influence of her friend Henry James' novella, The Aspern Papers, is evident in her story of a young man tempted to sell love letters sent to him by a famous author for whom he did not care, in order to make enough money to marry the woman he loves. The psychological miasma he is thrown into due to his guilt and fear of exposure balance his slow maturation in realizing his betrayal of the woman who loved him first. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jacqueline and Ffiona -- The more things change . . . : I've been gradually rereading some of the books on my shelf between new releases and popular titles in my favourite genres. This one hit hard and I realized quickly why I'd hung onto my battered old copy with the Strand price tag on it for so long. Anyone who's read Hearts, Strings knows I'm a big fan of Edith Wharton. Her prose is more circuitous than that of most modern novels, so it takes some attention (and I don't always have it to spare), but boy can she articulate the ways in which the world underestimates women and overestimates men. Invariably, when I'm reading her work, I want to scream about how little has changed in 100+ years. But I also feel like I'm spending time with a brilliant mind "who gets it." It's a solace. It also riles me up to keep fighting for change. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dave_42 -- Quick And Enjoyable : "The Touchstone" is Edith Wharton's second book and it was published in 1900. It was also published under the title "A Gift From The Grave". Her previous literary effort was a collection of short stories titled "The Greater Inclination" and this is a longer story, roughly what we would today call a novella. The author takes an interesting premise, and creates an engaging story which is easy to read and flows quickly. The reader doesn't want to put this book down.
